Capillary Concrete™is a unique material that combines macro-pores with micro-pores to be able to move water down with the force of gravity and up with capillary force. This is is the optimal solution to moisture control of sports surfaces, and it creates a very sustainable solution.

By being able to use capillary force and moisturize from below, water savings can be maximized. No excess water evapotranspiration, all the moisture directly from the bottom to create a dry surface which is still moist below.

Water restrictions is the single most important threat to golf worldwide. In order to truly manage a golf course in a sustainable way, water use must be kept at a minimum.

Capillary Concrete™ is also completely safe for installers and users, and can be used in sensitive wetland areas without any problems. No leaching and no dangerous hardeners or solvents are used.

Testing the latest applications in golf turf solutions, Capillary Tee and Capillary Green, suggests a 90% water reduction rate when it comes to irrigation. That is an important innovation for sustainability, golfing experience and money saved.

Strength and Guarantee

Capillary Concrete™ is a special type of pervious concrete made with Light Weight Aggregates and a range of polymers that create a very strong bonding. Concrete in general is widely accepted as the strongest material available to create outdoor structures. There is a reason bridges, parking garages and airfield runways are always constructed of concrete… – it lasts!

This test is one of the many performed in our Technical Testing Facility, and it is one of the standard concrete testing methods to determine the strength of a certain type of concrete. Other testing methods involve subjecting samples to freeeze-thaw cycles of extreme temperature variations for 30 days, X-ray analysis and microscopic analysis of each bond.

There is hardly any material in our society today that has more rigorous testing procedures to determine the strength of the product than concrete. The consequenses of failing concrete in sky-scraper buildings for instance is not an option. Concrete strength is very important and the testing procedures are well documented and sophisticated.

One of the reasons for the strength of Capillary Concrete™ is the homogenous mixing. You can be sure that each and every part of the Capillary Concrete™ material is equally strong and bonded. There is no risk for the bonding material to not mix well like a spray-on product.

Capillary Concrete™ is designed to be strong enough to last for many years in a bunker. The strength actually increases over time as it is exposed to moisture.

 Moisture control of the bunker sand is more than just drainage. Moisture control is the ability to freely drain rain events and to be able to keep moisture in the bunker sand in dry conditions.

The ability to move water against the force of gravity – Capillary Action!

Above, you can see the result of moisture being fed to the Capillary Concrete™ and how it has started to moisturize this steep bunker face. The Capillary Concrete™ system utilizes capillary action to moisturise the bunker sand from below. This is done through the special Capillary Concrete™ technology with polymers that create microscopic connections in the actual binding agent of the Capillary Concrete™.

What is capillary breach / connection?

Capillary breach occurs when the pore sizes of two materials do not match, and moisture will then not be able to move against gravity, upwards in the profile. Capillary breach is used in a USGA – green to stop irrigation from exiting into the drainage system until the profile is filled up. Water will not move from a small hole to a large hole until gravity is strong enough to pull it down.

In a green, capillary breach is a good thing if there is 300 mm of sand. In bunkers, we want to avoid a capillary breach as it only results in sand shifting and sliding down the face of the bunker. It results in sand having different moisture levels within each bunker which result in different playing conditions and higher maintenance costs.

 Capillary Concrete™ contains large pores that freely drain water by force of gravity, but not too large in order to avoid migration of sand particles into the drainage system. If the large pores are too big, the sand will eventually clog the drainage system.

When does migration occur in bunker sands? – If you let the bunker sand dry out, which can easily happen if the liner is not capillary connected to the soil, sand will migrate down through the drainage system even if the pore sizes match a USGA- greens requirement. This is because dry sand more easily can penetrate and move, and dry bunker sand gets shifted around and worked in to the drainage system.

Moist sand stays in place and does not migrate if the pore sizes are kept within the requirements.
