Soil Scout enables land use related water and energy optimization in an unprecedented detail and ease by providing a future-proof below-ground monitoring system.

Soil Scout provides the only wireless sensors capable of transmitting moisture, temperature and salinity data in near real-time out-of-sight performance from up to 2 metres / 6 feet below the surface, for up to 20 years, maintenance free.

Understanding what's happening below the soil surface is critical for many industries. Soil Scout takes monitoring to the next level by providing a detailed view into in-field variation, enabling our customers to expand the Precision Agriculture approach to all land use challenges, be that smart farming, irrigation control or turf quality optimization.

Previous solutions for measuring environmental conditions are based on wires and cables or a single observation pole, which are impractical, inefficient, labour-intensive or unable to assess spatial variability. Soil Scout provides critical insight into data from deep below the surface wirelessly, enabling 365x24 insight and profiling which allows our customers to perform better, understand their operations deeper and reduce water and energy use by up to 50%.

Understanding what’s happening under the ground is critical for many industries. Current solutions for measuring environmental data are primarily based on often-inefficient wired technology, or on expensive & labour-intensive manual sampling. Soil Scout provides critical insight into data from deep below the surface – wirelessly.

We have developed and patented a small, cost-effective wireless sensor platform that depending on conditions, transmits near real-time data for up to 20 years, and at a depth of up to 2m (~6ft) underground: maintenance free. Now you can easily measure at the correct depth for your needs!

The solution was originally developed with farming & agriculture in mind, but multiple industry sectors are benefiting from the ability to easily and continuously monitor their own below-ground environments, regardless of season or weather conditions.

Solution Elements

The Soil Scout solution is made up of a number of different elements that can be scaled to provide you with the optimal solution, whether you want to monitor a single Golf Course green, or multiple agricultural fields of 1000ha or more.

The building blocks of the solution are:

Scout
The core of our solution. The Scout is a small, durable, wireless buried device. The Scout transmits small packets of data several feet below ground on either an hourly or every 20 minutes basis (by default), to an above ground Receiving Antenna.

The HYDRA Scout measures temperature, salinity and moisture content, but we can integrate other sensors, including 3rd Party, combinations via FLEX Scout for custom projects.

 

Receiving Antenna
Receives the Scout transmission, and passes to the Base Station.The antenna choice (typically Yagi or Omni) depends on the specific needs of the installation.

Base Station
The Base Station receiver unpacks the compressed Scout packets, and passes them to a GSM/WCDMA Modem, which transmits the data to Cloud & Analytics. Each receiver can handle 1000+ Scouts. 

Typically pole or building mounted, it can be located up to 1km / 1000 yards away, depending on site-specific characteristics. Alternatively it can be pole-mounted on in-field irrigation equipment such as pivots or lateral move systems.

The Base Station requires cellular coverage, and suitable data-enabled SIM card (not provided). Note that we currently do not support CDMA (Verizon). 

ECHO Repeater
In situations where the Scout signals may be too far from the Base Station Receiving Antenna, or there are topographical or other barriers to line of sight transmission, one or more solar-powered ECHO Repeaters can be used to pass the signal along. Range up to 10km (6 miles), depending on Antenna type.

By default, the ECHO comes with a stub antenna, but alternative antenna's, such as Omni or Yagi, can be used instead.

Cloud & Analytics
The Scout data is uploaded in real-time to the Soil Scout Analytics platform. Viewing is via a standard computer or mobile device web browser.

The data can be visualised and analysed in multiple ways, including via a Map Overlay. The Analytics platform incorporates notification and alarm functionalities, and an optional API capability.

Golf Courses

There are approx. 40,000 managed golf courses worldwide, using an estimated 9.5 billion litres / 4.5 billion gallons of water - every day. This represents a significant cost to courses in terms of water and irrigation power.

In addition, governmental water restrictions are increasing in many parts of the world, as are environmental pressures to be responsible with previous limited water resources.

Soil Scout enables the continual monitoring and profiling, regardless of season or conditions, and the tailoring of turf care based on the specific conditions on each hole.

Smart Cities
